History
In 1894 six men and four women through an inspiration, visualized a blueprint for a tabernacle, a place of worship, thusly organizing the King Solomon Missionary Baptist Church which was named for King Solomon of the Old Testament. The six men who organized the church were Brothers Moses Parker, Amos Taylor, John Grant, Green Richmond, John Bolden Sr., and Sidney Clay. The four women who helped to organized the church were Sisters Bessie Turner, Sallie Butcher, Jane Clay, and Julia Ann Thomas. King Solomon Missionary Baptist Church was organized with twenty (20) members that met in a house on Henderson Street. Reverend Green Lewis was elected as the first pastor in 1894 and served until December 19, 1899.
Over the years, there were six other pastors between 1900 and 1982: Reverends Matthews Evens, John Anderson, P.U. Bims, Ephriam Wade Rhone, W.S. Scott, and John Scott Sr. The first congregation was housed in a wood frame structure located on Henderson Street. The membership grew and in 1908 the church purchased and erected a sanctuary on a hilly lot on Spring Street. Realizing the inconvenience of the church’s location on the hill, two lots across the street was purchased. In 1921 the church was moved across the street to it’s present location.
King Solomon has experienced tremendous growth since its inception. The church has added an education complex which consists of a full kitchen, nursery, pastor’s study and six classrooms. The church has also purchased two adjacent lots with future plans to expand it’s ministry. King Solomon Baptist Church is currently under the leadership of Reverend Doctor Freddie Schiele.
